a question for #fitness.

I have a question for the fitness industry and community. …maybe a few.

What would the roster of full-time fitness professionals look like if the majority of us were focused on making an impact rather than an impression?

Would we be better off if we chose a new collective of markers for the “standard” of success in human performance?

We judge dancers / models / artists on how they can convey ethereal beauty.

We seek out therapists / lawyers / doctors based on competency.

And they get booked and paid according to how well they can convince an audience / brand / employer to get that job once and repeatedly.

All of the people above get more chances when they’re really good in their lane.

And we ask that fitness professionals meet both ends of that creative-to-competent spectrum. And while there are very smart / talented trainers our there, a lot of trainers simply aren’t good at one thing; then, they try to be just ok at a lot of things.

At what cost?

Would we be more respected as professionals if we sought prestige before clout? Would we be less prone to gatekeeping / fear of losing clients / burnout if we collectively mastered one or two things instead of being a generalist in things we can’t prove expertise?

Would we be better off if we had a return to physique / pageant / modeling focused training of the classic era for people who thrive in that corner? And leave the scientific, research-intensive jargon to people who passionately challenge their understanding of nutrition and physiology?

Would we be a more solidified network of professionals if we relaxed a little when our clientele diversified their consumption instead of talking them out of seeing a PT / RDN / chiro / LMT ?

Would the fitness consumer be happier and more trusting if more of us stayed in our lane? Or maybe studied our way into the lanes we want to be in?

Fame can be a fun side effect of any industry. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good and be revered. However, if that’s your focus for joining the party, there are more lucrative ways for that. Be here for your clientele.

Ask yourself, “Are you here to make an impression or an impact?”
